4 HUGE Franchise Trends Revealed!

My 4 Biggest Takeaways from the FranChoice National Conference

I just got back from an incredible week in Cincinnati at our FranChoice National Conference, and my head is still buzzing with insights, new ideas, and a renewed sense of excitement for the future of franchising. This wasn’t just a typical conference; it was a true mastermind event. Imagine a room with over 400 people – founders and C-suite executives from over 100 franchise companies, funding partners, marketing experts, and nearly 100 of my fellow franchise consultants.

The energy was palpable as we celebrated a huge milestone: 25 years of FranChoice! Our founder, Jeff Elgin, shared a statistic that blew me away: since 2000, our network has worked with over 50,000 candidates and helped place 15,000 people into franchise ownership. It made me incredibly proud to be part of an organization that has had such a profound impact on so many lives.

My goal at these events is always to keep my finger on the pulse of the industry, to understand the shifts and trends so I can better serve you. I spent the week in deep conversations, learning what’s new, what’s working, and what the future holds. After digesting a notebook full of notes, I’ve distilled it all down to the four biggest takeaways that I believe will shape the landscape for anyone considering investing in a franchise.

1. An Intense Focus on Cost Reduction

A recurring theme in nearly every conversation was the franchisor’s intense focus on reducing costs for the franchisee. In today’s economic climate, profitability is paramount, and smart franchisors are finding innovative ways to protect the bottom line of their owners. This isn’t just about cutting corners; it’s about strategic efficiency.

We saw examples of brands in the education and daycare space re-engineering their models to decrease the physical footprint, eliminating wasted space and saving new franchisees well over six figures in build-out costs. In the home services sector, the power of economies of scale is being leveraged more than ever. As brands grow, their collective buying power allows them to negotiate better pricing on everything from paint and cleaning detergents to vehicles and equipment.

One of the most interesting strategies we heard about was the use of vendor rebates. Even if a franchisor can’t lower the upfront cost of a product, they are negotiating volume-based rebates on the back end and passing most, if not all, of those savings directly back to the franchisees. A few percentage points saved here and there can make a massive difference to your profitability over the course of a year.

2. The Rise of National Accounts

Another powerful trend, especially for established brands, is the strategic acquisition of national accounts. As a business franchise consultant, this is something I look for as a sign of a mature and robust system. Franchisors are now dedicating full-time staff to forge partnerships with major household names like Home Depot and Lowe’s.

What does this mean for you as a franchisee? It means a potential new stream of customers and revenue that you didn’t have to generate yourself. When the franchisor secures a national partnership, your location can become the preferred local vendor for that major retailer. This provides incredible brand recognition and a steady source of referrals.

Of course, this takes time and scale. A brand needs a significant national footprint to service these large accounts, but it’s a clear indicator of a franchisor’s commitment to driving system-wide growth. It’s a way to increase your reach and revenue without overcomplicating your core services.

3. AI is No Longer a Buzzword—It’s a Foundational Tool

The conversation around Artificial Intelligence has moved far beyond simple chatbots like ChatGPT. Franchisors are making serious investments—hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars—to build proprietary AI systems that streamline operations and enhance franchisee support.

AI is being integrated to:

  • Automate Training: I spoke with a franchisor who feeds all their audio and video content (including podcast interviews like the ones we do on the Franchise Freedom Podcast) into their AI. This creates an instant, searchable knowledge base. A technician on a job site can type in a question and get a video tutorial in seconds, reducing the need to call the franchisee or corporate support.
  • Increase Call Center Efficiency: We’re hearing about AI that can handle over a thousand calls or chats simultaneously, answering basic questions, scheduling appointments, and taking payments 24/7. This dramatically reduces the need for a large human staff, lowering costs and ensuring no lead is ever missed.
  • Enhance Marketing: AI is constantly learning from customer interactions, refining marketing messages, and optimizing ad spend in real-time to lower costs and improve conversion rates.

By investing in and owning their own AI infrastructure, franchisors are creating a powerful, long-term competitive advantage for their entire system.

4. Strategic Marketing to Ensure a Stronger Launch

Finally, there’s a clear trend of franchisors doubling down on marketing support to ensure new franchisees get off to a strong start. They understand that initial momentum is critical for long-term success and confidence.

We heard from a handful of brands that are now offering to match a new franchisee’s initial marketing spend, essentially giving them a significant credit to kickstart their launch. They know that getting the phone to ring early is essential.

Even more strategically, some franchisors are reverse-engineering the launch process. They’ve calculated the exact number of customers or members a new location needs to break even. Their marketing engine starts working before the franchisee even opens, with the goal of hitting that break-even number from day one. Imagine the feeling of opening your doors and knowing your monthly costs are already covered! It’s a powerful strategy that shows a deep commitment to franchisee success.

Your Path to Franchise Freedom

These trends paint a clear picture of a franchise industry that is becoming smarter, more efficient, and more supportive than ever before. As a franchise guide, staying on top of these developments is how I help you find opportunities that are not just a good fit for your goals but are also positioned for future success.
