Now, let’s get to the main conversation. I asked Spike about the story behind Art of Drawers and what makes this franchise opportunity exciting.

Spike Albrecht’s Unexpected Journey into Franchising and Art of Drawers

Spike’s journey into franchising is fascinating. Like many, it was unexpected. He started in basketball, playing at the University of Michigan and Purdue, then coaching. Spike wanted a change, so he shared:

“I was coaching for like four or five years, but ultimately decided that… college basketball is an absolute grind. It’s nonstop. So I knew that’s not what I wanted for the next 30 years, you know, late nights, weekends. So I shifted to get back into the business world.”

With a mentor’s help, Spike found the franchise space and the Rep’m Group, a franchise development firm. This led him to Art of Drawers, where he now leads franchise development. His story shows that diverse backgrounds can succeed in franchising. Transferable skills and a willingness to learn often matter more than specific industry experience.

Fun Fact: Spike Albrecht’s nickname comes from his childhood love of baseball spikes! He also played college basketball at Michigan and Purdue.

What Exactly Is Art of Drawers? More Than Just Drawers!

For those unfamiliar, Art of Drawers isn’t just about drawers; it’s about transforming homes through organization and style. As Spike explained:

“AOD is a service brand. So we specialize in custom pullout drawers for kitchens, pantries, and bathrooms. We also do cabinet lighting and cabinet refacing. So what I tell folks is, we’re kind of merging two sectors. We’re merging the home organizational piece… And then we also do cabinet lighting and cabinet refacing, which is going to be more of the aesthetics that home renovation space.”

Art of Drawers franchisees provide custom solutions for existing cabinetry, enhancing organization and accessibility. They also offer cabinet lighting and refacing, a cost-effective alternative to full kitchen remodels. This dual focus creates multiple revenue streams and serves a wide customer base in the booming home services sector.

Who is the Ideal Art of Drawers Franchisee? It’s About People and Management

When considering any franchise, it’s vital to know the ideal franchisee profile. For Art of Drawers, Spike stressed the importance of an owner-operator model and specific personal traits:

“For us, it’s definitely more owner operator or full time, right? Meaning, we want you to be involved in the day to day… it really comes down to two things because of the way that our business model is structured. You have to be comfortable and enjoy building and managing teams… and then there’s also a sales and networking component.”

The ideal candidate:

  • Is Owner-Operator Focused: Ready to be involved in daily operations, especially at first.
  • Enjoys Team Building & Management: Comfortable managing a small team of designers and installers (typically 1099 contractors).
  • Has Sales & Networking Skills: Outgoing, enjoys community engagement, and is comfortable with consultative sales.
  • Is Not Required to Have Home Service Experience: Art of Drawers provides training; transferable skills are more valuable than specific backgrounds.

Design or installation experience isn’t necessary, but a passion for customer service and strong management abilities are key to success in this business consulting franchise opportunity.

Scalability and the Franchisee’s Evolving Role

One appealing aspect of Art of Drawers is its scalability. While franchisees start hands-on, they transition to a managerial role as the business grows. Spike described this evolution:

“In 12, 15, 18 months in, it’s more so managing and overseeing your team… But it’s really getting out and doing some of the networking, connecting with realtors, home builders, countertop companies, flooring companies, creating your referral network, doing some of those things on the biz dev side, that’s what we deem more of our empire builders.”

Initially, franchisees learn the business, master product knowledge, and build a customer base. Within a year, their role shifts to overseeing teams, business development, and strategic growth. This scalable model allows ambitious owners to expand into multiple territories and build a substantial enterprise over time.

Support and the Emerging Brand Advantage

As an emerging franchise brand, Art of Drawers provides a high level of support and access to its leadership team. Spike highlighted the training and ongoing assistance franchisees receive:

“You know, folks in our system aren’t just a number like they have direct access to Alan Young, who’s a founder in the whole C-suite team, Leslie Josh, who’s our chief marketing officer. So there’s a ton of support there… having a leader and a founder who understands how to grow and scale, but most importantly, support franchisees and make sure that they’re successful.”

This includes:

  • Comprehensive Training: Five days of in-person franchise partner training in Atlanta and three days of installer training.
  • Ongoing Virtual Support: Weekly system-wide huddles and bi-weekly check-ins with the marketing team.
  • Direct Access to Leadership: Franchisees can communicate directly with the founder and C-suite team, a benefit often found in emerging brands.
  • Turnkey Marketing & Call Center: Art of Drawers manages digital and print marketing, SEO, PPC, and provides an in-house call center, allowing franchisees to focus on sales and growth.

This strong support, combined with the founder’s experience in building a successful franchise system, offers a solid foundation for new franchisees.
