Surv CEO Patrick Brown – From Water Holograms to a Mission-Driven Franchise
More Than a Business: The Inspiring Mission and Model of Surv Franchise with Founder Pat Brown
Hey everyone, Giuseppe Grammatico here, your Franchise Guide. Welcome back to the Franchise Freedom Podcast! Today, I’m thrilled to introduce you to a founder with a truly inspiring story and a business model built on purpose, community, and connection. I recently had an amazing conversation with Patrick “Pat” Brown, the founder of Surv, a unique home services franchise.
For those of you just joining our community, remember that my goal is to help corporate executives like you explore the path to time and financial freedom through franchising. Now, let’s dive into the powerful story behind Surv.
From College Side-Hustle to a National Mission
Pat’s journey is a testament to how a simple idea, born out of necessity, can blossom into a life-changing mission. Facing financial hardship in college after his parents lost their jobs, Pat started a business called “Rent Sons” in his small Rhode Island town.
“I just knocked on every door in my town and said, ‘Hey, you can rent me and I’ll do whatever you want.’ …The tagline was ‘quality service at the cost of an allowance without the complaining of an actual son.’ That no complaining guarantee worked wonders for me.”
Pat would do anything on a homeowner’s to-do list – weeding gardens, cleaning garages, putting up Christmas lights. This not only helped him pay for college in cash but also allowed him to build deep, meaningful relationships with his Candidates, many of whom were seniors. He became their go-to “son,” providing a one-stop-shop for household tasks and, in the process, gaining a profound sense of belonging and purpose.
After a successful but unfulfilling detour into the world of high-tech water special effects (a fascinating story involving the world’s #1 DJ!), Pat felt a clear calling to return to his roots and scale the “Rent Sons” model, which eventually evolved into the Surv franchise.
The Surv Model: A To-Do List Partner for Homeowners
At its core, Surv is a to-do list membership for homeowners, specializing in the smaller, odd-job projects that many larger contractors won’t touch. Their “Core Four” service categories include:
- Moving & Junk Removal: From moving furniture within the house to local moves and decluttering.
- Yard Work: Weeding, edging, mulching, pruning, and other landscape maintenance tasks.
- Odd Jobs: A catch-all for general assistance, including a unique “do with you” model where homeowners can hire an extra set of hands to help with their own projects.
- Exterior Cleaning: Power washing, soft washing, window washing, and gutter cleaning.
The business operates with a team of primarily W2 employees, ensuring a consistent and professional brand experience. The recurring revenue model, built around weekly or monthly visits, creates predictable cash flow for franchisees and a reliable service for homeowners.
The Heart of Surv: Elevating the Next Generation & Serving Seniors
What truly sets Surv apart is its powerful dual mission. Pat’s personal experiences with loss and his observations of societal disconnection fueled a desire to build a business with real impact.
“The mission of the business is to elevate the next generation through meeting the needs of the community,” Pat shared. “The real heart that we’ve had is growing young people that have worked in the field and having them go out and serve the elderly.”
This symbiotic relationship is the magic of Surv:
- For Young People: It provides meaningful work, practical skills, mentorship opportunities, and a sense of connection and purpose, combating the loneliness and mental health challenges facing many in Gen Z.
- For Seniors: It provides a reliable solution for the small tasks that can be barriers to aging in place, allowing them to remain in their homes safely and comfortably, while also offering a dose of companionship.
This deep sense of “why” is what energizes Pat and his team, and it’s a powerful draw for franchisees who are looking to build a business that is both profitable and purposeful.
Franchisee Role & Unparalleled Support
The Surv franchisee, or “Community Partner,” can take one of two primary roles: the Community Manager, overseeing daily operations, or the Community Business Developer, acting as the face of the business and networking with referral partners like realtors, senior care agencies, and property managers.
What’s particularly exciting is the robust infrastructure supporting these franchisees. Through a strategic partnership with Cornerstone, Surv leverages the backend support of its sister company, FirstLight Home Care, a system with 300 franchisees.
“We’re wrapping… our arms around the franchisee to really give them the business in a box so that they don’t have to do a lot of thinking,” Pat explained. “All they have to do is like follow the playbook.”
This provides emerging franchisees with the support of a seasoned franchise system, covering everything from marketing (print, digital, B2B, lead gen) and technology (CRM, scheduling, QuickBooks) to HR recommendations.
Pat’s Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
As a successful founder, Pat offered some incredible advice for any corporate executive thinking of making the leap into business ownership.
- Start with Your Desired Life: “Ask yourself the life you wanna live and build a business around that.” Don’t just chase a business idea; design a business that facilitates the life you want.
- Find What Makes You Come Alive: “If you aren’t excited about what you’re doing and you don’t believe in what you’re doing… I can’t last more than a week.” Passion and belief will fuel you through the tough times.
- Embrace the Power of Focus: Pat quoted Andrew Carnegie: “The way to become rich is to put all your eggs in one basket and then watch that basket.” Go all-in on your venture. Diversifying your attention too early can dilute your effectiveness.
- The Fire is a Good Thing: “The best times I’ve performed in my business is when I had a fire under my butt.” Don’t be afraid of the pressure; often, it’s what drives peak performance and innovation.
Final Thoughts
My conversation with Pat Brown was a powerful reminder that a successful business can, and should, be about more than just money. Surv offers a compelling model for those looking to build a recurring revenue stream while making a tangible, positive impact on their community. It’s a business with both head (a smart, scalable model) and heart (a deep, inspiring mission).
If you’re looking for a franchise business opportunity that invigorates your soul as much as your bank account, Surv is a concept you need to explore.
